In Austria, there is a legal obligation to register one’s residence. This means that every person must register their place of residence. This applies to both Austrian citizens and foreign nationals who are staying in the country for an extended period. The registration must be completed within a few days. Any person who is officially registered in Austria can request a confirmation of registration for themselves or for someone for whom they are responsible (e.g. a minor). In rural areas, this confirmation can be obtained from the local municipal office, called the Gemeindeamt; in cities, it is issued by the municipal authority, called the Magistrat. The application for a confirmation of registration can be submitted in person or in writing to the competent authority. A basic confirmation of registration can also be requested online via the website oesterreich.gv.at. To do so, you will need an ID Austria or an EU-Login, as well as an online payment option such as a credit card or online banking. To issue a confirmation of registration, an official photo ID is required (e.g. passport, national ID card, driving licence, or Austrian residence permit).
