Within the EU, there are standardized education regulations for general health and nursing care. This allows for automatic recognition in the host country.
The basis for this is the European Directive on the Recognition of Professional Qualifications (2005/36/EG).
The general recognition procedure:
The procedure for having nursing qualifications recognized by the Austrian Federal Ministry of Social Affairs, Health, Care and Consumer Protection is as follows:
- Completion of education in a European Union (EU) member state, a European Economic Area (EEA) member state, or Switzerland.
- Alternatively, education completed in a third country, provided you are authorized to practise the corresponding nursing profession in an EU member state, an EEA member state, or Switzerland. Additionally, you must provide evidence of at least three years of legal and relevant professional experience within the territory of that state.

The one-stop recognition procedure:
The one-stop recognition procedure is the fastest way to obtain recognition, especially in the field of general health and nursing care in Austria. When you submit the necessary documents, you will receive recognition within one hour. Please check the checklist and the specified qualification requirements starting on page 3 to see if your education is listed. If it is not included on the list, your qualification cannot be recognized using the one-stop recognition procedure.
For other qualifications not mentioned in the information sheet, the conventional recognition procedure is available.
