EU citizens

EU citizens enjoy visa-free travel within the European Union and have the right to stay in Austria for a period of three months. This right exists regardless of any economic activity.

According to EU law, EU citizens have the right to stay in Austria for more than three months if they meet one of the following conditions:

  1. Employees or self-employed persons in Austria: EU citizens who work or are self-employed in Austria have the right of residence.
  2. Sufficient means of subsistence and health insurance: EU citizens who have sufficient financial means and comprehensive health insurance cover do not need to claim social assistance or supplementary benefits during their stay.
  3. Educational purposes: If the main purpose of the stay is education or vocational training at a state school or legally recognized private school or educational institution, EU citizens can also stay in Austria for more than three months. In this case, they and their family members must have adequate health insurance and sufficient means of subsistence.
