Health Professions Register

In Austria, individuals in the health and nursing care professions are required to register in the Health Professions Register (GBR). These professions include Nurses with a degree in Health and Nursing Care, Nursing assistants level 2 and Nursing assistants level 1. Only those who have successfully registered are permitted to work in these professions. Registration is required both for individuals who completed their training in Austria and for internationally recruited health and nursing professionals following nostrification. During the nostrification process, individuals undergoing nostrification may work in health and nursing care roles under the following conditions:

  • If nostrification is pending for qualification as Nurse with a degree in Health and Nursing Care, temporary work as Nursing assistants level 2 is permitted.
  • If nostrification has been granted for the role of Nursing assistant level 2, temporary work as a Nursing assistant level 1 is permitted.
  • If nostrification has been granted for the role of Nursing assistant, temporary work as a Nursing assistant is permitted under supervision and guidance.

These individuals must be registered in the Health Professions Register. Registration is managed by the government agency Gesundheit Österreich GmbH and the Arbeiterkammer.
