Sick Leave

If an employee in Austria is unable to work due to illness or an accident – provided this did not occur through intent or gross negligence – their salary or wages will continue to be paid for up to six weeks. Depending on the length of the employment relationship, this period can be extended to up to twelve weeks. After that, the employee is entitled to receive 50% of their pay for a further four weeks, which may also be extended to up to twelve weeks, depending on the duration of employment. Thereafter, sickness benefits can be claimed from the social insurance system – or even during the period when only half of the salary or wages is paid. To qualify, the illness or accident must be reported to the employer immediately, and a medical certificate confirming the inability to work must be provided.
